How to buy a used camera safely in the UK

Where to buy used cameras and lenses in the UK, your consumer rights, warranties, grey imports and a checklist for inspecting gear.

Buying used can save 30-50%, and cameras last a long time. Here is how to do it without getting burnt.

Dealers vs private sellers

UK dealers such as MPB, Wex Photo Video, Park Cameras and London Camera Exchange grade and test used gear and give a warranty (MPB offers 12 months; other dealers' terms vary, so check before buying). When you buy from a business, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 says goods must be of satisfactory quality, as described and fit for purpose, with a 30-day right to reject faulty goods, and online purchases usually come with a 14-day cancellation period. Buying privately on eBay, Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree, your main protection is that the item must be as described, so inspect carefully.

Paying safely

Paying by credit card for items between £100 and £30,000 gives Section 75 protection. PayPal Goods and Services gives buyer protection; never pay a private seller by bank transfer or "Friends and Family".

Grey imports

Grey-import cameras, from dealers such as Cotswold Cameras, are bought outside the UK and cost less, but usually come without the UK manufacturer warranty. The dealer's own guarantee replaces it.

Inspection checklist

  • Shutter count: compare it with the model's rated life.
  • Sensor: photograph a blank sky at f/16 to reveal dust or marks.
  • Lens glass: shine a torch through to spot haze, fungus or scratches.
  • Mount and contacts: look for heavy wear or bent contacts.
  • Zoom and focus rings: smooth, with no grinding.
  • Autofocus and stabilisation: test both.
  • Ports, card slots, buttons and screen all work.
  • Battery: check its health in the menu where available.
